South Minneapolis Homes in Longfellow Neighborhood

Longfellow is a  South Minneapolis residential neighborhood situated between the Mississippi River and Hiawatha Avenue on the east and west sides, and extends from Minnehaha Park on the south side, and 27th St railroad tracks on the north side.  It is characterized by quiet streets and a landscape dotted with parks and playgrounds.  If you live here already, you know about the large city park at Minnehaha Falls and the trails along the top of the Mississippi River that enjoy plenty of trees and views of the bluffs on the east side of the river in St. Paul.  Owning a Longfellow home in South Minneapolis means that you will have a convenient location for shopping, and a light rail system for a quick commute to downtown Minneapolis or the Mall of America. You also will enjoy special amenities like the Dowling community garden and the discount Riverside Theater with old style architecture, layout, and decor.

According to the Northstar Regional Minneapolis MLS at the time of this post, there are a total of 69 single family Longfellow homes for sale.  Prices range from the $60’s to $1M.  Average asking price is $210,994.  This figure is skewed upward by a $1.2M Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home boasting two double stall garages and a guest house, and a prime location along the Mississipi River.

The vast majority of these homes are listed in the 100-200k price bracket, and are mostly 1.5 story houses with coved ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors, stucco siding, and many of them were built in the 1920’s.  The 1920’s was an era where quality craftsmanship was dominant, and the homes were built rock-solid.  Lathe plaster, heavy oak trim, and built-ins were the norm.  You will see a number of one story bungalows, and a few tudor style homes as well.  There are six handyman specials for sale under 100K.  Looking for newer Minneapolis houses? There are a few two story homes in Hiawatha Commons that were built in 2000 and sport vintage style architecture.
