Hennepin County Taxes

You do not compute your property tax bill. An assessor is assigned to this task, and you receive a bill once a year in the spring. If you have a mortgage on the home, chances are great that your tax bill is paid through an escrow account by the bank. The tax cost is collected in monthy increments. If you don’t have an escrow account, you can mail a check, or you can pay your bill online according to instructions on the tax bill. You can also use this link for paying Hennepin County taxes. Payment for the first half of the calendar year’s taxes is due May 15th; the second half is due by October 15th.

Factors that determine your Hennepin County Property Tax

  1. The amount the county spends on public services. Funds are budgeted for the public school systems, and for city governments. Budgets are also prepared for special districts like the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District, the Metropolitan Council, and the Metropolitan Transit.
  2. The assessed market value of the property. This value may be appealed by the Hennepin County taxpayer.
  3. The classification or use of the property, i.e. residential, agricultural, commercial, homestead, or non-homestead.

Each city within the County has its own formula for calculating property taxes. Also, some cities have many districts within them that have their own tax computation methods. Therefore it is impossible to list all of the many tax rates and formulas for each city and district. The best way to inquire about your property tax rate and formula is to contact your respective city hall and ask for the respective city tax assessor.
